Data Entry Jobs – Are they Fraudulent?

By Vishal P. Rao

Data entry jobs, by the mere name that they have, seem to be jobs that anyone with some basic training on computers can accomplish. The companies that offer such jobs make tall promises of the kind of money that you can make while sitting at home. They also highlight the fact that these data entry jobs are so easy that they can be done by anyone. The lack of investment required for such jobs makes them an attractive option for people who have time on their hands and want to make some extra money to add on to the family income.

However, taking on data entry jobs has a limitation. Since the payment is generally on an hourly basis, there is a limit to what you can hope to earn. The scope for expanding horizons and moving up the value chain in terms of the kind of work done is limited.

Traditionally, data entry involved taking some information that did not exist in the soft form and entering data to create a database. The entered data could be in the form of numbers entered in a spreadsheet or text poured on to a word processor from a transcript or a manuscript. As the online businesses expanded, data entry moved to cover online data entry as well. This meant that more people could be employed simply for entering past data or current data into archives or databases that various companies needed to maintain online.

However, the definition of data entry has changed over time to include other aspects as well. Also known as ‘keyboarding’, data entry today, encompasses entering data online to promote products. These products could be owned by you or by an affiliate of yours in the Internet marketing space. As data entry or keyboarding expanded to include such tasks, it lost some of the advantages that it had for a beginner. No longer is the work as simple as entering data from one platform to another.

Even though you can earn a fair proportion of sales amount by promoting products, there are additional marketing and writing skills that you need to be able to sell the products adequately. The demand for such data entry personnel and the counter lack of awareness of the affiliate programs led to a spate of fraudulent companies promising the world by means of training.

Companies that promise something in return of an initial investment cheated a large number of unsuspecting consumers by not delivering the goods. Some companies offered that individuals could buy a report to get trained in how to promote affiliate programs. However, in most cases the promised report failed to be comprehensive enough to aid in the process of learning the tricks of the trade. Additionally, some aspects of affiliate marketing revealed in these reports makes you aware of the fact that you a ctually need to invest and pay for the ads. As a starter in affiliate marketing, you are not offered any coaching post the purchase of the report. In most cases, the duped individual has no way in which he can access company professionals for further guidance. Companies that prance around as data entry job suppliers are really not supplying any jobs!

There are other companies that sell a list of businesses that need data entry professionals. The blatant advertisements of such lists promise to provide you the contact details of the appropriate and relevant people. However, once you pay the money and receive the list, you realize that the database is actually not updated and that most of the information is outdated or irrelevant.

Further still there are also some companies that claim to take you through a short course on data entry to train you in the specific requirement that they have. They insist on the use of specific software (which no one in the normal world would have heard of) and sell the software, training material and practice sessions for an upfront tidy sum of money. In most cases, these frauds are carried out in a short span of time where the company enlists a large number of people in a few days and then suddenly vanished from the face of this earth.

It should be generally known that one does not need a high level training to be able to take on any of these jobs. All that you need is a certain amount of resourcefulness and the basics of that you need to know is already out there on the Internet. The safest and most reliable source of getting data entry or keyboarding work is to join some popular Internet marketing forums. Offering your service on freelance sites shall also enable you to get started. Last, but not the least, even though the Internet space is booming, you can still visit some of the local companies to check whether they have some data entry work and whether they will allow you to operate from home.
