Online businesses - be-aware!

"Advancements in computer technology and the internet have changed the way America works, learns and communicates. The internet has become an integral part of America's economic, political and social life." ~Bill Clinton

Today the internet has opened the doors of opportunity to countless people. An increasing number of people are beginning to make money off the "net." Simply do a search online and you’ll see for yourself that millions of people from around the world have made use of the business opportunities that have arisen from this invaluable marketing tool.

The internet has also made it possible for people to work at home – without having to rely on a basic nine-five kind of job. Home-based businesses are very popular today, especially since people are beginning to realize the benefits of working at home.

The recent years however, have also seen a rise in "work-at-home job-scams." This is when so-called "job posters" use "fake" job listings in order to get hold of applicant details, which include both personal and financial information. It’s important to be-aware of such scams before you start applying for jobs online. Always think twice before you provide any website with any of your details, no matter how "authentic" the website may seem. And remember – if it sounds too good to be true; it probably is.

Not all online-businesses are scams - the internet is not all "big and bad." Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have reaped countless benefits off the internet – you just have to know how.

To avoid "getting caught" to the several job scams that have been plaguing the internet, just keep the following in mind;

  • Contact the Better Businesses Bureau (BBB) for information on the company- The Better Businesses Bureau's website will also give you information on complaints, (if any), in relation to the company. And if you require information on commission actions, contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

  • Most legitimate work at home companies will ask for the following information;

    • Resume
    • Experience
    • References
    • Salary requirement
    • History

    If the work at home company doesn’t ask for the kind of information mentioned above, be wary of the offer.

  • Ask for references such as other employees and contractors.

  • Find out if the work-at-home job is listed in the "job postings".

  • Ask the right questions – especially about how they’re planning to pay you. Are you going to get a salary, or will you get paid on commission? Are you going to receive a cheque or a deposit in your bank account?

  • Beware of "processing claims" - this is when you will be asked to purchase software and start-up "equipment." Be wary of so-called prospective employers who claim that you will have to pay them so that they can get you "started." It’s surprising how many people get caught to this almost too-obvious money-making scheme. There are also a surprising number of websites that claim to provide you with information on "legitimate" work-at-home jobs – for a fee of course! Avoid such websites.

  • Do not trust "get-rich-quick" schemes. If you’re offered a high-income for a simple part time job – be careful; this is likely to be a scam. Most people get drawn in by such claims.

There are plenty of ways for you to earn a lucrative income by working in the comfort of your own home – but it’s important not to get carried away or cheated by money-making-schemes. Be smart and choose wisely when it comes to your work-at-home options.
