Procrastination Fixes for Home Business Owners

By Vishal P. Rao

Working at home successfully is a major goal, and a lot of people face the same problems when they are trying to achieve their goals. One of the major problems that occurs is procrastination. It can be a big obstacle to success.

Procrastination can rob of of opportunities, wasted time and energy and poor performance. When you procrastinate, you increase your stress levels and end up feeling like a failure. Procrastinators fill their time with the unimportant tasks that can be put aside. They don't spend time to advance their goals. They keep themselves busy with things that aren't necessary. This is a recipe for disaster in the small business world. If you continually put unimportant tasks ahead of the necessary activities, you'll busy yourself right out of business.

Procrastination is a result of a pattern of behavior. If you've noticed this pattern, don't worry. Any pattern that you have now can be changed and altered. In no time at all, you can produce optimum results. When you delay necessary tasks, you are procrastinating on important ones, but you're also procrastinating on your own success. Taking time away from the necessary tasks in your business will put you further away from your goals.

Understanding why you procrastinate may help you fix the problem. There are many different theories as to why people procrastinate. Some say that it's a bad habit, while others believe it's caused by irrational thinking. Whether it's a simple behavior or a complex psychological problem, the result is the same. The important things don't get done and you end up falling more and more behind.

If you are disorganized, you are more likely to procrastinate. When you get sidetracked and off-course, you become forgetful and can lose track of your priorities. You end up lumping unrelated tasks together. For example, you may think that you need to check your e-mail before you pay your bills. You end up spending your free time checking your e-mail instead of doing what you should be doing.

Procrastination is also based in fear. If you feel that your procrastination is a result of fear, then you need to identify the fear and the source of the fear. You may be suffering from a fear of failure, a fear of success and fear of change. One of these (or all of these) may be keeping you from achieving your home business success.

The last common component of procrastination is perfectionism. You feel like you must do things perfectly, or not at all. The fear of not doing something perfectly can contribute to you putting off a task.

In order to fix procrastination, you've got to analyze your life. You need to identify what factors are preventing you from doing the things you need to do for your business. Once you pick out what is increasing your procrastination, you can take steps to minimize them. For example, make a list of the important projects in your business that need to completed. Prioritize them based on when they need to be completed. Start with the most important task and then work your way through the list.

Get over your perfectionism by telling yourself that completing a project imperfectly is better than not completing it at all. Understand that you can only achieve your business related goals if you take steps to complete your tasks. If you get overwhelmed by the enormity of your tasks, then break them down into small measurable steps. When you complete small mini-goals along the way, reward yourself for completing that part of the project. Then have a big celebration once you are complete.

Tell other people about your intentions. If your friends, family or accountability partner knows that you're trying to overcome procrastination, then they can help you stay on task. Being accountable to someone else may help you stay motivate to make the changes in your life that you need to make.

Procrastination is not easy to overcome, but it's necessary for work at home business success. Write down your triggers for procrastination and then develop a plan to overcome them. Set your sights on making small changes in the way that you work, and you'll eventually be able to forget about procrastination entirely.
