Experienced At-Home Transcriptionist

We are seeking experienced individuals to do general transcription from educational and research institutions, writers, and private companies. We do no medical or legal transcription.

We need people available to work at home during normal business hours and are not able to use those looking for a position for evenings or the weekends.

The position is ideal for someone who has good listening skills, is aware of current political and cultural events, and is looking for an income supplement.

The job involves transcribing interviews, speeches, and focus groups and requires typing skill, a good ear which is capable of distinguishing between voices, and the ability to work with a range of dialects and accents.

Required equipment includes a computer with a high-speed (DSL or cable) internet connection since you will need to download audio files, a foot pedal, and good-quality earphones or headphones. Required software includes at least Microsoft Word 2003

Familiarity with Express Scribe or a similar online transcription program is necessary as is an understanding of the fundamentals of uploading and downloading files. A facility to search the Internet to locate names of places and people which may not be clear in the audio but which can frequently be figured out by a brief net search is also important.

We will ask you to take an introductory test, which serves two purposes. It lets you understand the kind of work you will be doing, and it gives us an idea of your skill level. You will download the test from us, complete it, and return it to us.

Pay is $1.50/page to start with a review in two months. A page consists of an 8.5 x 11 sheet with one-inch margins, using Courier New 12 point type, double-spaced. We estimate that the average hour of audio produces approximately 40 pages. Most transcriptionists take about four hours to complete one hour of audio, so the comparable hourly rate is approximately $15.00.
