Are you asking about Google PageRank or are you asking about positioning in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)?

In both cases, it comes down to effective Search Engine Optimization.

You optimize the text on your web page.
You optimize the source code of your web site.
You build backlinks from other sites on the Net.

SERP positioning is far more important and can be far more valuable these days than PageRank.

Positioning high on the first page of the search results can bring you the traffic you need to generate sales.

If I might add. Don't discount the low search volume keywords. I turn on the cost per click estimate in the tool above. If a keyword has low search volume but a high cost per click, I keep an eye on it, because sometimes quality is better than quantity. You can have 1000 clicks a week, but sometimes you get better results (sales) with 100 quality clicks. You need to keep in mind the buying cycle, try to target people that are done researching a product and are ready to buy it.

Go for long tail keyword with low competion. SEO efforts for long tail keyword will bring in targeted traffic.

-keywords in domain name
-domain age
-keyword on title
-Keywords on the page
-Using H1 for keywords
-Backlinks

If you take it simply then first of all you have to understand the competition, if the competition is high then try to find out the ways where you can defeat the competitors and do accordingly.

Continuously update your site and ping it whenever you update it.Build some quality backlinks from the site or blogs who have the similar topic like yours and get a higher search engine ranking.
