|
|
Scoping is editing transcripts for court reporters using a specialized computer-assisted transcription (CAT) program.
You have to love reading, not mind sitting in front of a computer for many hours and either have an eye for detail or be willing to develop that through the scoping training program.
We receive the text file and usually the audio file of the proceeding that we listen to to make sure everything is included and it is all contextually correct. For instance, making sure the correct version of "here" or "hear" is translated from the court reporter's stenographic language.
There is plenty of work available and most of the graduates of my training program connect with a court reporter within a week to two at most. Each scopist works as an independent contractor. So there are no benefits.
But most of us who work from home enjoy the benefits of that in itself.
Normal turnaround for the editing is five to seven days. When we receive the file, 90 percent or higher of it is already formatted, double-spaced and ready for us to begin reading.
Our keyboard keys become macros filled with editing shortcuts that are so cool. So we are not transcribing. Although when people speak too fast or talk over each other, the reporter simply can't get it all down. It is our job as a scopist to insert that text, research for correct spelling or formatting, punctuating it for clarity and several other things.
Just thought I'd tell you a little bit about the field in which I work. I began scoping in 2006 and quickly realized that the training I received had not completely prepared me for the work.
I limped and struggled for nearly a year until I could finally keep a court reporter. Once I figured out the key to success, I decided to use my educational background in education and curriculum development and created my own training program.
This month we're celebrating our fourth anniversary.
I came here to network and find other ways to market what I do.
Because of having an educational framework established for this curriculum, I'm working on expanding into developing other curricula.
By the way, we use the WizIQ virtual classroom to teach our 30 classes which are all recorded. Students can view them live or watch the recording at any time. Because of how slick this has worked out, we take eight weeks off in the summer while everyone else is enjoying their
summer vacations, too.

Thank you.
I've been inundated by court reporters requesting more scopists
from our team this morning.
Some people call that job security.
Hope you are all having a good Monday. _________________ Ms. Devon Roberts

Well, as your title implied, many don't know about this job. I'm definitely one of them. That actually sounds like a pretty neat job to me.
I would like to correct you on one point though. "No Benefits" I know what you meant, but, working from home has benefits out the wazooo. Haha _________________ Where I Blog -- http://empowernetwork.com/cmilburn

Yes, I agree.
Because I live with some chronic pain issues, this has worked out great for me.
And I personally love to work from my home. My boyfriend likes how
flexible that allows me to be with any future moves or travels.
So long has the Internet is available, I can work anywhere. _________________ Ms. Devon Roberts

Ms Roberts,
I have a relative who has been trying to break into the editing field. She actually loves to do what you described here. I am wondering where I can tell her to get started trying to do this kind of work. Do you have the names of any companies you can share? |

The company that is doing the most in the field right now is my company.
In fact, this business is practically tripling at the moment. And we're adding other things behind the scenes to keep expanding our work in the field.
One thing is building additional training programs for realtime scoping which is of great need for the court reporters. That is for the seasoned
and experienced scopist whose been working for two years or more.
I can honestly tell you I'm not blowing wind up anyone's skirt on this. And we have court reporters who keep coming back to us for more scopists on our Joyful Scoping Leads team members.
I hope I won't be kicked off of this forum for providing my company name. So I'll provide it in my signature and hope for the best.
When so many people are looking for work, I think it's important to educate the public about this job.
I've written this at 5 a.m. so any errors are due to writing it before my
brain has fully been awakened.

It's been a while since I have had time to visit this forum. For that, I do apologize.
I just wanted to let people know that my contact information has changed.
I can now be reached at accoladescoping@hushmail.com. I also moved my website from Joyful Scoping to Accolade Scoping Education.
Six more scopists have graduated from our training program and are already actively working.
Have a great weekend.
Devon
