Posted: Sat Dec 15, 2007 3:31 pm Subject: Social Networking... how best to use it |
|
|
Social Networking is growing up. If you've been around for any time, you may remember the old Yahoo Chat Rooms. Or maybe you do the IRC.
With MySpace, social networking has grown leaps and bounds. It's almost imperative that you have a MySpace account and that you take the time to create both YouTube movies as well as some audio files (something I've not yet done). Got the MySpace thing... just not the video and audio.
Of course, for those of us in marketing, one of the most-tempting sites is CraigsList. It is possible to do some marketing there, and not get your hands slapped... but you really have to pay attention to what you're doing. Since any blatant marketing is against their TOS, you won't find me advising on any techniques or tactics.
When you do find a social network... what do you do to optimize your experience?
Create a professional profile.
By that I mean, make sure what you post is is readable. Spell the words correctly. Don't put up graphics for the sake of making your page "look pretty". You'll probably make it unreadable.
Set your audio files, music included to only "play on request", not automatically when the page loads. Do the same thing with your video files.
Get involved in the forums and the chats... but DON'T PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS.
Look at it this way... would you walk into a crowded sports bar and announce your business? Or would you dare to go sit at someone's table where they're busy with others... and start babbling about your latest way to make money?
I think not... You'd either be in a fight, or escorted out the door by the manager.
It's the same with the gathering places in the social network... Become a part of it. Get to know the folks and let them get to know you.
People do business with folks they know.
People become involved in businesses because of the people... not the opportunity.
I've identified MySpace as one social network... what other ones do you know of? How about sharing with us? _________________ Shari Thomas |

Hi Shari,
that was a magnificent post, thank you.
Your are 100% correct. People get involved with people that they not only know, but that they trust. This is key, especially if you are selling high ticket items. People are not just willing to part with their hard earned money to a website. Web 2.0 allows the trust factor to be built much quicker than with just conventional means. If people see your myspace page, get to know more about you, your family, interests, etc., they are more likely to become comfortable with who you are.
The majority of the people out there are "sponsor shopping". They are looking for people that they trust and feel comfortable with, and most importantly, feel that they will support them and help them in their new endeavour. Which is what any good and effective sponsor does. She or he is there to support their team to make sure that their success is duplicatable.
Thanks for the input Shari! Have a happy new year! _________________ To Your Success,

I just became aware of Hub Pages. Supposedly the "newest, latest, and greatest."
Hub Pages is my first venture into Web 2.0, but it looks like it might be an interesting combination of blogging (which I am also kind of new at) and article marketing.
They have a 13-page pdf tutorial and a forum to ask questions. I have already made much use of the tutorial!

If you have a WordPress blog there is a plugin called "Add This".
Once Add This is installed you can directly post a hotlink of each of your b log postings to your MySpace account and your FaceBook account (it also does StumbleUpon,Digg,Delicious,Propeller and several more).
A great little tool and best of all its free.
If I am not mistaken I believe this forum uses it. |

I'll have to check that out. I use MySpace, Facebook and my new favorite is Twitter. I have a Wordpress plugin that adds my posts to my Twitter acct, but it would be great to have one that added them to all of my social networking sites... _________________ Sharon

That's right, this forum has the AddThis button. I just added the AddThis Bookmark button too to my blog.

I use MySpace, Facebook (2 of them, one for business and one for friends and family) and Twitter is great as well. I also use something that posts to facebook and my wordpress blog from Twitter. I have a connection that shows my blog on my website page as well. And more... _________________ Kathryn Maclean

I have,as late, been getting more involved with FriendFeed.
It's fun and it interacts with most of the 2.0 sites mentioned so far |
